There are many things a church can do to fulfill its mission. One of the biggest questions a church has to answer is what will it do and what will it not do. In 2010 the elders of Red Sea set out to answer these questions. We had done many things that worked well and many that did not work at all. In a way we felt like we were just spinning our wheels jumping from one idea to another. We knew that in order to bring health to the church we needed to clarify how we were going to accomplish our mission. After many months of prayer, seeking the scriptures, and asking others advice we introduced Pathways to the church. If our mission is the what then, Pathways is the how. It is the Pathway that we take to accomplish the mission.
We started by asking the questions what does the gospel teach us about "Who is God" and "What has He Done"? We then asked in light of that "Who are We" and "What Should We Do"? Here is what we came up with.
The gospel message declares that Jesus took the form of a servant, even to the point of death on the cross. Therefore God exalted him to be Savior, and Lord over all things. (Phil 2:5-11) Therefore we have the Identity - Servants. We are servants who submit to Jesus as Lord and serve others in His name.
As Servants of Christ, we devote ourselves to:
Scripture – Reading, studying, teaching, applying, and obeying the Scripture (Bible).
Prayer – Praying “in Jesus’ name”, various types of prayer, alone and with others.
Worship – Acknowledging the greatness and grace of God in attitude, word, and action; responding through repentance, faith, and thanksgiving to God’s ongoing work in us.
These Pathways equip us to achieve our mission; Draw to Christ.
The gospel message declares that in Jesus Christ all people have access in one Spirit to God the Father, removing barriers and hostility, creating one people who are the family of God. (Ephesians 2:11-22) Therefore we have the Identity – Family.
We are family who love each other as brothers and sisters. (1 John 4:21) As Family in Christ, we devote ourselves to:
Peacemaking – Resolving conflict, extending and receiving forgiveness, working towards reconciliation, pursuing what makes for peace and for mutual up-building.
Sharing – Intentional and mutual sharing of time, truth, and treasures.
Celebrating – Rejoicing in God’s work in and through each other, affirming each other; acknowledging milestones of life and spiritual growth with thanksgiving.
These Pathways equip us to achieve our mission; Develop in Community.
The gospel message declares that God sent His Son into the world full of grace and truth to save the world through Him. (John 1:1-18) Therefore we have the Identity – Ambassadors We are ambassadors entrusted with the ministry and message of the gospel. (2 Corinthians 5:18-21)
As Ambassadors for Christ, we devote ourselves to:
Hospitality – Sharing time with others with kindness and generosity; inviting others into our homes and going into their homes
Service – Contributing to the needs of others in tangible and beneficial ways
Evangelism – Speaking the saving message of the gospel to people who don’t know Jesus
These Pathways equip us to achieve our mission; Deploy into Culture. (John 20:21)
